Online slots, explained

How a slot round works

You set a stake, spin, and a random number generator (RNG) decides the symbols that land. Wins are paid when symbols line up according to the game's rules, shown in its paytable.

Older-style games use fixed paylines. Many modern games use ways to win (matching symbols on adjacent reels) or cluster pays (groups of touching symbols). The mechanic changes how often small wins appear, not whether the game is random.

Terms you will see

RTP (return to player)

The theoretical share of all stakes a game pays back over a very large number of spins. It describes the long run, not your session.

Volatility

How results are spread. Low volatility: frequent small wins. High volatility: long gaps, occasional large wins.

Hit frequency

Roughly how often a spin returns any win, if the studio publishes it.

Free spins

A bonus round, usually triggered by scatter symbols, played without extra stake.

Buy feature

An option in some games to pay a fixed multiple of your stake to enter the bonus round directly. Availability depends on the game and region.

Max win

The cap on what a single round can pay, usually expressed as a multiple of stake.

How to choose a slot

• Open the info or paytable panel and note the RTP and volatility the studio lists.
• Choose a stake and pace that fit your budget. Volatility describes how much results vary; it does not guarantee how long a budget or session lasts.
• Check the minimum and maximum stake before you start.
• Look for demo mode if your regional site offers it, and learn the bonus round there.
• If you are using a bonus, confirm the game counts toward wagering. See promotion terms.

Common misconceptions

"It's due to pay." Each spin is independent. Previous results do not change the next one.

"Higher RTP means I'll win today." RTP is a long-run average across all players. Any single session can land far above or below it.
