Slot RTP and volatility, explained

Two numbers in a slot's info panel tell you most of what you need to know about how it behaves. Neither tells you what will happen next.

RTP: the long-run average

Return to player is the percentage of all money staked on a game that it is designed to pay back over millions of spins. A game listed at 96% is designed to keep about 4% of stakes over that very long run.

For one player in one session, results swing widely around that figure. RTP helps you compare games; it does not predict a session.

Some games are released in several RTP versions. The game's info panel on your regional site shows the version you are playing.

Volatility: how results are spread

How volatility typically feels in play
Lower volatilityHigher volatility
Win frequencyMore frequentLess frequent
Typical win sizeSmallerLarger, but rarer
Balance swingsGentlerSharper, with long dry spells
Session lengthNot set by volatility. Stake size, pace of play and results decide how long a budget lasts, on any game.

Putting it together

  • Set your budget and time limit first, then choose a stake per spin you are comfortable with.
  • RTP is an average over a very large number of plays. Over one session you can lose your whole budget on any game, whatever its volatility.
  • Playing faster or at a higher stake uses a budget more quickly; volatility only changes how unevenly results arrive.
  • Compare RTP between similar games, and check the version shown in the info panel.
  • Remember bonus rounds are part of the RTP; long gaps without them are normal on high-volatility games.
