Reading sports odds
Odds tell you two things: what you get back if you win, and the probability the price implies. Here is how to read both.
The three formats you will see
| Format | Example | If the bet wins |
|---|---|---|
| Decimal | 1.80 | Returns 18 in total, including your 10 stake. |
| Hong Kong | 0.80 | Profit of 8, plus your stake back. Decimal minus 1. |
| Malay (positive) | 0.80 | Same as Hong Kong when positive: profit of 8. |
Negative Malay odds describe an underdog-style price from the other side: at −0.80 you risk 8 to win 10. Convert to decimal with 1 + (1 ÷ 0.80) = 2.25.
Implied probability
For decimal odds, implied probability = 1 ÷ odds. At 1.80 that is about 55.6%. Add up the implied probabilities for every outcome in a market and you will usually get more than 100%; the excess is the bookmaker's margin.
Using it in practice
- Pick one format in your account settings and stick with it.
- Compare the implied probability with your own view before betting.
- Check the market's settlement rules, especially for handicap and totals lines.
- If a promotion has minimum odds, confirm which format it is stated in.
